Blackest Truths

By Fadeen | March 11, 2015

He watched her depart the chamber leaving to her rest.. his mind a tumult of thoughts.. feelings long since absent raging through him like some great storm at sea.. stirred both by her, and by what he now thought upon. He had considered this but once since he had left so many years ago.

Even then, he had considered the risk too great.. Too dangerous to try.. His brow furrowed at the memory of the one such attempt he had ever seen.. his hand flexed absently at memory of it the emotions of that time sweeping him. At once the sorrow seemed nearly overwhelming and he stopped his motion pausing in the black place between worlds, the halls of the academy dim around him present but obscured by the void.

What if that was to be her fate? Some mad dog, he would have to put down as he had that one so many years past.. That was even assuming much, hadn't She always said their blood to thin to make it so? Then what? She would die as all others had.. As any he had fed upon.. and he would go mad.. Becoming little more then the things he had been made to fight..

Only so much more.. A Hunter, Turned, then set to madness? Nothing would ever stop him.. He would make Cyric appear little more then a pleasant breeze.. Compared with the tempest he would bring on the world.. Why had they pushed him to this? Why had they forged him only to turn him? A Safeguard? They had made him a perfect weapon.. and then let the weapon free..

Now he stood before the precipice staring at what may be his only chance at staving off this madness.. torn between the two choices.. Attempt.. solve madness for ever, at risk of all. Do not, watch life fleeting over slow time.. salvation for now, only to descend back into the blackness a little each day as she neared death's embrace..

No. He must set to the decision.. make it and be done with it.. Risk all, or take safer albeit fleeting path..

But he would not choose this for her.. He owed her the truth of it.. the decision he was not presented.. with as much as she could understand of it.. as much as she could garner..

Then he would consider her words.. put weight to his fears.. and set foot to path..

Walking into the Darkness once more..

Of Innocence Lost

By Annalise | March 9, 2015

A small, bloodied hand set upon the center of the large altar the child lay upon, her broken, ravaged body crawling in a desperate, yet futile attempt to reach the still outstretched limb of her mother.

The twisted, macabre scene of her mother's lifeless, mangled corpse as it lay, rendered near fleshless had been burned into the forefront of her memory where it would remain a haunting testament to her father's weakness.. his utter inability to control that which he sought to seize from the unforgiving clutches of the nether..

"Sweet little morsel.. so like your mother.." The ragdoll body of her mother was jerked from the floor, escaping the small, shaking hand that failed to reach her by scant inches as the beast above her wrenched the butchered cadaver up by it's hair, the dark mahogany tresses forever stained in the deep crimson of her life blood.

"Father! WHY?!" Utter terror, pain, anguish and betrayal echoed from the small girl in a voice so unlike her own.. the harsh rasping of a throat raw from the tormented wails of unbridled agony. He had taken everything from her.. everything that had been the safe cocoon in which she had thrived until this moment, and still the beast that had once been her father stood above her, poised and laughing through the ghastly gape of its mouth.

Even as the young child wept, her face smeared in the fetid amalgamation of tears, dirt, and the carmine of her blood she continued to utter the softly spoken incantation. Every syllable, every enunciation left her lips with such a perfected understanding that the demon that stood above her took pause, its gruesome visage twisting and contorting with a hatred born of pure jealousy.

"You hope to succeed where he failed, little girl?!" The deep baritone of his voice boomed in a dark cacophony of sound as clawed fingers grabbed at the nape of the child's neck, hefting her broken body from the ground even as her mother's was thrust against the cold, stone wall of the ritual chamber. A sickening crack of the woman's bones elicited a shrill cry from the young girl that struggled in vain against the crushing grasp of her captor.

It was pure terror that drove the girl now, her hands clutching helplessly at the wrist of the demon that held her, dangling above the altar and as she closed her eyes, the child seemed almost accepting of her fate. Death awaited her, just as it had claimed everything that she had held dear.. everything that had once been precious to her.

Vicious claws hovered above her, their bloodied tips aimed to rend the heart from her chest and yet as she braced herself for the inevitable agony of her final moment, the deep echo of his laughter that had pierced her ears cut abruptly short.

The soft hitch in his throat, the gentle sigh of encroaching death that passed the demon's lips forced the child to open her eyes. The scene before her wavered as the beast's heart landed in a sickening thud upon the dirt beneath them, the darkness that sought to claim her narrowing her vision until only a single entity lingered at the apex of her distorted sight, and as her body crumbled upon the floor, two arms took her into their shelter, reverently cradling her in such a way as to remind her that she would never truly be alone.

" ..Sallos."

Ease of mind

By Fadeen | March 9, 2015

He remained with her long after she had slept, one hand smoothing her hair, one wrapped around her shoulder.. a blanket separating them to keep the warmth. Even flushed with her blood as he was now, he knew it would not last long and she would need the heat she still held..

He sat in the bed her head resting in his lap as he stared across the darkness of the room, his mind drifting.. It had been so many years since he had done anymore then feed upon any of them.. so very long since any had caught more then his most passing attention and yet here was this girl.. barely more then a child in many ways.. and he could not concede to honour his own plan to let her go..

His fingers traced her cheek the soft murmur slipping her lips as he watched her draw slow breaths.. Beautiful? Doubtless.. but many were, this in and of itself was insufficient.. It was the strength of will, the strange intangible quality that allowed her to refuse him, that and her questions.. it was these things that set her aside.. Even present fear still she wished to know.

She had spoken of what he wished.. and he had said it was more than just her blood.. more than just sustenance.. But how do you explain that after so long.. the greatest terror one could face was another day of solitude.. how do you explain that at the end of it.. even as you walked from all you knew, to find your own way.. that often you miss them.. Both families.. the one you left in life, and the one that turned you out in death..

And yet what could he hope to achieve with this.. what could be settled.. he knew the answer, and he hadn't wished to risk it when faced with chance before.. how could this be any different.. in fact, could it not be worse? Loathe to admit it, but he had spoken true, absent intent when he had said he needed her.. had to have her..

It had almost been too long, too long killing and feeding, with no connection, no remorse.. no empathy for anything.. He knew what lay that road, had almost seen it become once, and always thought those weak enough to succumb deserving of what awaited them.. and yet the road he was walked ran into that at the end. The irony of it was nearly enough to make him laugh, but he stifled it, instead turning his gaze back to her sleeping form.

At once the feeling washed over him once more, the slow peace he could not find for himself.. the one that eluded him endlessly and yet lay sleeping in his lap in the form of this beautiful oddity of a mortal.. He felt his own lids grow heavy but fought it off.. he was not of the habit of sleeping, absent proper protections and so since his return to this land sleep had remained absent. But now.. with her, maybe there might be some purpose to seeking life more valued then simply moving between places in which to kill.. maybe there was some semblance of something beyond, endless existence..

Maybe there might yet be life.. or at the least, some vague recollection of it..

Delightful surprises..

By Fadeen | March 7, 2015

The sickening sound of shattering bone filled the air with the impact as the man struck the wall with such force as to drive the blood from any path it might find. The broken body crumpled, but before it could strike the ground beneath the sturdy wooden wall that protected the brigands camp, the shadows swirled and he was upon it.

One arm pinned it against the wooden wall, his head moving to the man's throat like a snake to the strike.. At once he drew deeply the sound like some savage beast gorging itself upon what flesh it could consume.. the camp was filled with the sickening sound of it, and it drew more.. As he would have it.

As the next rounded the corner he wrapped an arm around him, drawing him in and breaking his neck in one swift movement, the sickening crack being overshadowed at the sound of fluids being drained with such ferocity..

The third faltered, uncertain as the creature rounded the corner coming into the torch light, he held his sword aloft screaming out for the archers. Those on the wall took aim but even as they loosed arrows into the night, aim true, they were met with nothing but whisping shadows as the strange attacker vanished.

In another whisp of blackness the figure appeared once more, seizing the third figure from behind and slamming him into dirt, he went once more for the neck, but this time the sound was less pronounced the feeding slower, satiation nearing..

Slaked the figure rose, wiping his face absently on the torn remnants of a cloak worn by one of his victims..

Turning he let the darkness take him moving silently in the world absent colour, absent sound.. His thoughts turned to her, and the choice he had left her with the resilience shown in face of all that he was.

He had remained to watch her standing as he did now within the darkness, watching her beyond her perception near the very blackest part of the void.. It was something he had rarely had to do for all but the most perceptive of his own kind, and here he was using it to stave off the notice of a Kine..

She intrigued him it was true, and he could scarcely contain his desire to satisfy his want of her.. but at the end of the day her words rang true in at least one regard.. He had been alone, and at that for a very, very long time. That in and of itself, had stopped him from draining her of her life tonight.. But what had truly surprised him was her answer..

To refuse herself.. He had never seen it.. had it ever happened? Surely.. But within his line? Of that he could not be sure. In some dim place within what little left of him could still feel, or rather, could still remember what it was to feel he hoped she would simply ask him to let her be.. But in the end, she would choose what they all had chosen.. Who could resist the perfection they saw? The benefits.. And how did you explain to something that could feel it's body dying a little each day, that such thing was the smallest possible way you could face the grip of death?

His own voice seemed hollow and horrible in the blackness of the void as he walked from the settlement..

What choice will you make Annalise.. Is it possible for -you- to leave such door unopened..?

Riku VanGroft’s

By GoldHotShot4 | March 6, 2015

Much has happened in the life of the City of Narrowhaven. most recently a new king took the throne. Riku VanGroft, a blacksmith from deep in the mountains. little is known of about him and even less is asked. yet he managed to take the throne without a single objection. in fact many seemed more then happy for him to take the seat. all was well until one day, shortly after Riku was crowned, a plague struck Narrowhaven. with no clue as to how it started he began his search for answers refusing to let his people die in the streets. he soon realized this was no ordinary plague. those who died by its hands would soon rise and begin attacking the citizens of Narrowhaven. a few days into his search for answers he find Merrick Godfrey. the king of mythndale in narrowhaven searching for the asme answers. he was speaking to a woman in dark clothing, they would soon learn she was a necromancer. she was cryptic at best and insulting at worst but she aided them non the less in the search. soon Riku, Merrick and the woman found a traveling monk. he seemed ill and they approached him to ask if he knew anything that would help them. what they found was that the monk was already to far gone to the plague to be saved but as he lay dying he grasped at Riku's ankle and said "the Deboacher. The Ancient One" before he breathed his last. as the three stood there trying to understand what the man had meant Godfrey could contain his anger no longer and lashed out at the gods. calling whatever god it was that was doing this to show himself and fight. not a minute later 2 Ancient lich attacked the party and almost did them in. but through a tough fight and a lot of luck the party won out. though not before the lich could enchant a few citizens into attacking Riku and then Godfrey. after the battle Godfrey brought Riku to his privet estate to wait out the people madness and to try and decode what the monk had said in his final words. with no luck they begin to head back to Narrowhaven. as they walked out of Merricks office there stood The Beautiful Kairi Vel. the woman who from first sight had stolen Riku's heart. not that he wanted it back mind you. they all talked and kairi told Riku of a man looking to do business with him. he thanked her and smiled as Godfrey walked up to her and began talking. as they explained the troubles and current state of narrowhaven to kairi Riku began to notice something between Merrick and Kairi. he said nothing and help his words though In his heart he knew. moments later the two said they had to leave to take care of something and Riku in turn went back to Narrowhaven on his own in search of more answers. upon arriving he was beset upon by the fallen of the plague and quickly laid them to rest though before he could search for anything more he was summoned back the Merrick's estate. he quickly responded and with the wave of his hand and a flash he was standing in the courtyard of Merrick's estate again and they began going over their business. a few minutes into the conversation Riku could no longer hide the feelings he had seeing how close the two seemed and Merrick noticed. he asked Riku what was wrong and Riku responded asking what the relationship between them was. as they spoke and he saw how kairi smile at Merrick Riku could feel his heart tearing. it was clear that the woman he loved, was a woman in love with another. he steeled his face as to not show one ounce of the pain in his heart. moments later Kairi had to leave, Merrick offering to walk her home. Riku takes his leave. he turned his back and uttered the incantation of Runic Travel. but right as he was to vanish from their sight he looked back at Kairi. a look a true loss in his eyes and the pain of his broken heart showed clear. he knew not if she saw it and honestly he hoped she hadn't. he thought to himself "as long as she's happy" and pushed it all back down. not a second later he was gone. back in narrowhaven, at his small shop of a home he retired. pulling the books from his shelves to study anything and everything he could that might help him save his city. drowning out the pain of his bleeding heart with a purpose he sealed his feeling inside of himself and focused on the task at hand.

Temptation

By Fadeen | March 5, 2015

He drew another deep breath in through his mouth, letting the scent play across his tongue one more time even after she had gone.. the subtle taste that lingered, even moreso in the closed space of the library then it had been in the hall the day they had first crossed paths.

Such a dilemma.. so exposed, so much to risk, and potentially lose.. What to do.. what to do.

He'd not felt such temptation in a great many years now, the temptation to do more then simply satiate his need and toss aside an empty shell..

So perceptive.. just as the first day, even now.. even with all his charm, his looks, everything about him that naturally was meant to draw her in.. disarm her, make him seem pleasant, charming, engaging.. Even with all that still she stepped back.. Still she instinctively kept her distance. She was afraid of him.. that in and of itself spoke volumes.

Caution.. caution.. even so, even as he felt the familiar if long absent draw, he knew this was not a time to proceed foolishly. He had none of the protections he had in the old lands, no family, no friends.. None of the insurance of a crypt well hidden should something unforeseen happen.. No anything done now must have some strategic value..

As if playing a game of chest, each move had to be carefully calculated.. planned, and it -must- drive his goals.

Still, he had been too long absent a companion.. and such was a comfort even if nothing else was.. After all, what could the harm be of indulging his desires..

Waking

By Fadeen | March 4, 2015

Crisper.

He couldn't precisely place his finger on what had changed, though several small things seemed different since he'd awoken. The superficial changes were there, sure and hard to ignore he suspected for any who had known him before today.. But since almost none had, it was no great loss really.

What was more interesting was all the subtle way things had changed since he had woken, and the word that stuck in his mind, over and over again was 'Crisper'.

Colours seemed sharper.. more pronounced, sounds subtly clearer.. everything seemed.. more, somehow. But even more than that.. It was the way his mind seemed to flow so much easier from subject to subject..

He would never have said he was.. dumb, precisely. But that was the point, he would never have realized that he had always been well.. Dull. Not, dull as in a dullard, or someone who was of no use, he was dull in the simple way a bar of iron was dull. It simply lacked the luster of brighter things. But now, now it was as if everything around him was bright, polished to a mirror finish, but it wasn't that the world had changed.. But that he had.

What once had reflected back the dullness of his own mind, now reflected back the subtle light given off by whatever had changed..

It was not just that, it was also.. a sense of sureness. He should be terrified by what had happened, horrified even. Wasn't that the rational response? Certainly it was how he would have responded before.. and though he would never have said he was a coward per say.. on some level he'd always know that he was.. unsure. Unsure of so many things. Himself, his place in the world, the future, his choices.. When he had gone to help the first man to fall ill, and set this all in motion.. it hadn't been courage that had driven him. No even as he had gone to his aide, he was frightened. It had been compassion.

Compassion, and in the end, wasn't that what had caused this change? Both his own, and what had been shown to Him.

Regardless, Things were different and for today, that would be enough.

Moving forward

By Sulia | February 21, 2015

It has come to the attention of several lately that some changes have begun to take effect, and these changes should in no way cause anyone distress or worry as I assure in the end, they will only have a positive effect upon this shard and our player base. TheGuy and Talow have spoken with me at length about their goals for UO RP, and it is with great pride that I've accepted the position of Administrator as has been passed on to me by DoubleA.

Now, with this being said, in the coming weeks our player base will begin to see even more changes being implemented - starting with our ore system which Vii has already graciously updated for me. Thank you Vii! There is also an updated General Shard Rules section on our wiki. Please take a moment to familiarize yourselves with these new rules, as they will be enforced at all times. They may be found here: http://wiki.uoroleplay.com/index.php?ti ... eral_Rules

From here, I plan to improve upon and complete our current Craft Questing system as well as the way in which rewards are given via these quests. Directly following this, players will see an updated taming system and roster of tameable creatures.

Dungeon Master has as well accepted the position of Lead Storyteller and will immediately begin updating shard wide lore and weekly run events to progress said lore. I look forward to see him work his magic and put my full trust in his abilities.

Together we will move forward and make this shard a successful, thriving UO community. I look forward serving my player base, and thank you.

Shard Update: 2/21/2015

By Vii | February 21, 2015

Rare ore veins now have a better chance to be found and mined. Required mining skill to mine rare ores has been lowered to 100. This means you will be able to gather the ore at lower skills but you still must have higher skill in order to smelt the ore. This will allow miners to continue to gain skill above 100 by smelting mainly, so manage your ore weight carefully! Invest in an ore cart and pack animals. :)

Renamed Thorium to Adamantite in all related scripts.

By Talow | February 14, 2015

I want to see the artists we have out and about generate some kind of image of their (or another with permission) character! As this requires some work and exposure of your tallent (or lack there of) all post of your rendering(s), include (Artistic Fun) in the title will receive rewards.

PS: as I'm not an artists, or not one that will claim it at least anyone may render Engale.
